What an Email Spam Test Checks

  1. SPF (Sender Policy Framework). A TXT record that lists the mail servers allowed to send for your domain. If it's missing or misconfigured, receiving servers may reject your email.
  2. DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail). A cryptographic signature added to each email, proving it wasn't tampered with in transit. If your DKIM key is weak or missing, your email is vulnerable to spoofing.
  3. DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance). A policy that tells receivers what to do when SPF or DKIM fails. Without DMARC, you have no visibility into who's sending as your domain.
  4. TLS (Transport Layer Security). Encryption in transit. If your mail server doesn't support TLS, your email is sent in the clear, which is a red flag for receivers.
  5. PTR (Pointer Record, reverse DNS). A reverse DNS record that maps your IP address back to a hostname. If your IP has no PTR record, or the PTR doesn't match your domain, receivers may flag your email as suspicious.
  6. IP Reputation. Whether your IP address is blacklisted or has a poor reputation. If your IP is on a blocklist, your email will be rejected or marked as spam regardless of your DNS configuration.
